is either totally unable to get to sleep, or she wakes up during the night. When my wife goes through these phases where she does not sleep deeply, she becomes increasingly more nervous. As her sleep deficit grows and grows, in turn she becomes more and more nervous until finally it overflows and she physically collapses.(G. V.): I don’t want to hear an explanation of how you think her condition comes about. I just want a description of what takes place. Does your wife behave like a crazy or a normal person between the crises?
(H.): If she has not slept for a long period of time, she becomes afraid. I would describe her fear as a wall: she becomes more and more distant and aggressive towards people. At these times it becomes difficult to deal with her. We go around each other so as to avoid any upsets. She concentrates on problems to the extent that her worrying causes her to either lose sleep or to have nightmares. This goes back to the very first years of our marriage and it’s gone on constantly ever since. For example, we’ll be asleep and suddenly she’ll let out a terrible scream: “No, no, no! Go away!”, or something equally frightful. (G.V.): During the night?
(H.): Yes, and then I’d wake up and realize that I was frightened too. My wife’s pulse would be racing on these occasions. I would wake her up and say,”Look, here’s the bed, here I am, here’s the light, there’s no reason to be afraid.” I would try to soothe her, have a calming affect on her, but she’d look at me strangely, fearfully, as if she didn’t see me at all, as though she were still dreaming. I’ve constantly thought about this: What is it? How do you get to the root of this? Of course, then you come to all sorts of strange ideas as well. My wife hasn’t tried to find out whether
