there are two Tuberculinum preparations, plain Tuberculinum and Tuberculinum bovinum; how can we differentiate between these two? In short, if you intend to give Tuberculinum without a Tuberculinum constitution and without Tuberculinum symp-toms, what change in his well-being would you expect?
(G.V.): As I’ve already said, Tuberculinum is way down on my list of possible remedies. I would fall back on Tuberculinum if I found that none of the other remedies were helpful and I was getting desperate. Of course, I would first try to find the most appropriate remedy. But if by chance, the other remedies do not work and Tuberculinum fits the case, it might provide us with further possibilities for treatment. For example, one possibility is that Tuberculinum might change some of the symptomatology without changing the pathology. This could lead to another suit-able remedy, for example, Stannum or Causticum or Plumbum. The second possibility is that Tuberculinum might affect the pathology as well, which would show that it is indeed an indi-cated remedy. For instance, suppose our patient grinds his teeth and desires pork, then this person would have other character-istics of Tuberculinum. If you gave Tuberculinum in that case, it would have a beautiful effect because the causative factor is so strong and clear. He has some Tuberculinum symptoms, therefore we would expect to see Tuberculinum have a strong affect on his paralysis as well. Or Tuberculinum might change the symptomatology to such an extent that a new picture arises, perhaps Sulphur. Maybe there are underlying, hidden symptoms which would support the notion of Sulphur.
I am primarily interested in finding the remedy that covers the layer most immediately presented here. This layer, the top layer, is described by the present symptomatology and the patient’s pre-sent make-up. You will always see results with a remedy based on this layer. In cases like this there may not be dramatic results, for instance, the patient may not be able to walk or run after tak-ing Causticum, but nevertheless, it might set an improvement in gear. And if you wait long enough, you might eventually see the
