Indiscriminate treatment of acute infections may lead to activation of chronic diseases – a retrospective study of 45 clinical cases

Abstract

Background

The challenge in primary care and family practice in the last few decades has shifted from dealing with acute infections to chronic inflammatory diseases, which are presently the top cause for mortality in most populations.

Emerging research today is demonstrating that unresolved acute inflammation activates chronic diseases. The ‘Unified Theory of Continuum of Diseases’ and the ‘Theory of Levels of Health’ propound that the suppression of acute diseases repeatedly by drugs is the main causative factor for such a phenomenon.

Aim of the study

To evaluate if there is a case for suppression of acute infections as a cause for chronic diseases

Materials and Methods

We examined the medical history of 45 Indian patients with repeated treatment of acute infections in the past

Results

The patients were 29 females and 16 males with mean age of 14.04 years. 37 patients had a chronic disease diagnosis at the moment. 5 cases still suffered only acute infections. 3 cases exhibited both chronic and acute (albeit low grade) diseases. Only 1 case still had high fevers in response to infections. All of them were repeatedly treated for high fevers and other acute episodes in the past.

Discussion

This study, though very basic gives enough cause for concern about aggressive treatment of acute infections in children. This may serve as stress on immune system, activating the predisposed chronic state. It might be better to adapt therapies that boost the immune system rather than suppress it. Also, educating the primary care physicians and parents regarding the actual dangerous infections as opposed to those that are beneficial to the immune system is necessary.

Conclusion

There is need for a population based study to determine the effect of suppression of acute inflammation on the immune system.
