experience the back pains. Clearly, this was somatization of her grief, and Ignatia 50M promptly relieved the symptoms. She has had no recurrence for several years.
When Ignatia patients are experiencing physical problems (such as colitis, headaches, etc.), they will often note that a change of scene, such as is encountered when travelling, will bring about an improvement in their condition. They do not have a desire to travel, like Tuberculinum bovinum, but rather they are ameliorated while travelling. They may also be ameliorated by going out with friends, even though they do not wish to leave the home and have to be persuaded to do so. This amelioration is due to the distraction that takes place when undertaking such things; the mind is taken away from the problems the person broods upon so that the organ- ism can relax and amelioration of symptoms takes place.
UNPREDICTABLE AND CHANGEABLE BEHAVIOUR
With those she loves, Ignatia is unpredictable and very changeable in her behaviour. She may be predictable when she is with people to whom she is not close, but with those more intimate she is para- doxically unpredictable and very changeable. At one moment she is very gentle, very loving and romantic, but the least misun- derstanding immediately puts her off. She becomes sulky, almost malicious, and may make nasty comments. She is unrecognisable to those closest to her when she is in these states. She usually shows very little of the love and affection she actually feels because there is a deep fear that she will eventually be hurt if she is exposed. She fantasizes a great deal about her romantic feelings and can fall prey to her imagination. For instance, if she fails to keep her romantic at- traction under control and begins to express her affection for some- one, she can become so overly sentimental as to appear ridiculous and silly. Her affection is unbalanced and untempered.
The Ignatia patient is very sensitive and readily imagines that her love is not returned in full measure, that her lover is inattentive or
