THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES
I would like to begin this remedy picture by briefly recounting a patient’s case history:
A young man, 22 years of age, was seen in our clinic. His chief complaint was chronic headache. He complained of great heaviness in the head, and noted that his headaches were greatly aggravated by mental exertion. As a consequence, he was unable to concentrate. His headaches had begun a few years previously, during the course of failing his school examinations three successive times. He described himself as lazy and disinclined to study, summarising his attitude by saying, “I’d rather see the Devil than a book.” He was at that time still in school and fully anticipated failing again, a prospect that caused him much anxiety and despair and, occasionally, even suicidal thoughts.
The most significant aspect of this case was the impression he created during the interview. He appeared dull and heavy, and quite slow to comprehend. He seldom volunteered information and just sat quietly, looking almost stupid. He would often close his eyes and appear urea, when he was pressed with questions, encouraging him to be more precise with his answers, he would wrinkle his forehead in an obviously distressing and ineffectual effort to think. He was very sluggish and answered questions in brief statements only. Each such attempt to concentrate would be quickly abandoned, and he would frequently answer, “I don’t know.” Helleborus 50M transformed this case in the course of two months.
