course when they have to appear in a court, things become totally unbearable. They will seek for help from anybody, they feel totally incompetent to defend themselves, the idea of being in front of a judge is terrifying to them. Before appearing before a judge, even as a witness, they may go three times to the toilet with diarrhoea. They have such an anxiety that feel that they will lose self-control and will either talk nonsense or that they will not be able to utter one word. It is a state of emotional paralysis.
The same situation arises when they have to take examinations of any kind, or to undertake new projects in their work, and will try to avoid it as much as possible. They go in to such a state of anxiety that they prefer to lose everything than to go through such an ordeal.
In such a state of fear, if they receive any bad news this has a profound effect upon their health. They get so excited that they cannot cope at all in the beginning, and later on a lot of bodily symptoms may appear. They are afraid of death, they are afraid of crowds, they are afraid when they are in a high place that they may jump out. It is the frailty of their mind that contributes to such a state.
One of the first serious cases I have seen back in 1961 was a lady who was studying homeopathy with me who asked for a consultation. She was a sweet lady who looked much older than her real age, she was always nice when we gathered in her home in Johannesburg, a group of 12 people I was teaching. She seemed to understand with great difficulty what I was saying and eventually asked me to take her case. She said, “When I go out to the balcony I am in such a terrible state of confusion that 1 do not know whether I should jump out.” She was deeply depressed, but the idea of Gelsemium came to my mind when she said that she was so confused that she did no know whether she should jump. She never jumped after the Gelsemium, and lived long and taught homeopathy.
