such committee work is an ordeal for them.
Gelsemium is the main remedy we give when we hear that a person is experiencing fear, trembling, and an internal sense of paralysis in anticipation of various events such as appearing in court, taking examinations, giving a speech, etc. The paralysis can affect both the urinary and rectal sphincters with loss of urine or stool. The anticipa¬tion of such an event is immobilising: trembling, they ask themselves, “Oh my God, what shall I do?”. The fear of facing external stress is unbearable, and central to a Gelsemium case.
Complaints from fear, from embarrassment, from shock that is attended with fear, from sudden surprises that are attended with fright are routine. A soldier going into battle has an involuntary stool; or there are involuntary discharges from fright, and surprises accom¬panying fright. On becoming suddenly overwhelmed by some surprise he becomes faint, weak and exhausted, he becomes tired in all the limbs and unable to resist opposing circumstances. His heart palpitates, hiss knees are trembling.
This is similar to Argentum nitricum, which has the peculiar condi¬tion that when dressing to go out for the evening a sudden attack of diarrhoea comes on, causing more or less sudden exhaustion, and she must go several times before she can finish dressing. Those who are to appear before an audience are detained because of a sudden attack of diarrhoea. A lady has an attack of diarrhoea when about to meet friends, over whom she expects to become excited at the meeting.
I recall the case of a man who came for treatment for haemorrhoids and a duodenal ulcer. We gave different remedies which had only partial beneficial effects. He was an electrical engineer, and a very educated man. One day his wife telephoned to say that he was expected to go to a meeting at his child’s school, but he was afraid to attend such a simple meeting. He was in a state of panic, trembling at the thought of speaking in front of other parents.
