to cold and back several times a day), it may occur from falling into water or (for instance) from wading through cold water when fishing, from getting the feet wet when hiking, even from drinking cold water when heated (compare Bellis perennis). Very urgent desire for stool immediately on feeling cold is a keynote of the remedy.
The loose stools are usually slimy, sometimes also liquid, and frequently followed by great lassitude. A symptom from the proving: ‘In the evening, pinching in the whole hypogastrium, with desire for stool… had a large stool which was more moist, and finally very much, very thin and sour- smelling stool, which makes him feel relieved but weary’.
Often the diarrhoea is accompanied by nausea, sometimes also vomiting. From a case of Gross: ‘…has been suffering from diarrhoea since catching cold a month ago. Violent cutting in bowel, especially around the navel, then nausea, cold sweat, liquid stool, sometimes with vomiting at the same time. Last night the stools followed after each other without any interruption, nausea was permanent, and at the same time belching and constant, annoying thirst; biting in rectum as from salt; evacuation often coloured green and of jelly-like consistence’.
Slimy-bloody evacuations have also been cured with Dulcamara. The remedy may be indicated in dysenteric stools with symptoms of influenza, as drawing- tearing pain and stiffness of limbs, stiffness of nape, pain in small of back, etc. The Chronic Diseases also contain a number of symptoms that could indicate Dulcamara in constipation, but until now there are hardly any clinical confirmations. One should consider Dulcamara in permanent fruitless urging for stool with nausea, however; there are also reports about constipation as a concomitant symptom in strangury and ophthalmia neonatorum.
Urinary Organs
Dulcamara is frequently indicated in recurrent cystitis and also pyelonephritis as a result of exposure to wet cold, e.g. after sitting around in a wet bathing-suit after swimming, but also after shipwreck, etc. The remedy may act curatively in acute as well as chronic inflammations of the urinary tract, even if the cause dates back a long time.
