sensations seem to be centred in the forehead. ‘Dullness of head, but especially of the frontal region, with pressure and heaviness’. This confused sensation is felt most distinctly in the open air, and it may also be accompanied by a
‘dragging and writhing in the direction of the orifices of both ears’.
Heavy, confused and aching head, especially in the morning on waking (an exception to the general relief provided by sleep).
Heat and heaviness in the head, with soreness in the eyeballs on turning the eyes;
with a bad taste in the mouth, fainting spells and flushes of heat. Crawling sensation at the occiput during a diarrhoeic stool.
The scalp is very sensitive; pressure of a hat causes a headache, which stops when the hat is left off.
Eczema of the scalp, especially in infants; vesicular or pustular.
After exsiccation and desquamation the skin remains sensitive, red and inflamed. As soon as one spot is more or less free, new vesicles come out on another spot.
Eyes
In this region, symptoms of inflammation and irritation of all tissues of the eye are striking.
Conjunctivitis, keratitis, even iritis; inflammation, swelling and infiltration of the eyelids. Suppuration and ulceration; pustules and ulcers of the cornea, etc. Infected blood vessels, the whole eye looks red and raw. Photophobia and severe pain in the region of the eyes may accompany these states, as well as vesicular or pustular eruptions around the eye and over the whole of the face. In these inflammatory conditions, Croton is especially indicated when there is a pain in the eye extending backward, into the back part of the head, as though the eye were being pulled backward by a string or, in Kent’s words:
‘as if the optic nerves were dragging the eyes backwards into the head’. When this guiding symptom is present, the remedy will often be indicated in cases of ciliary neuralgia.
Soreness in the eyeball when turning the eye; with headache. Copious lachrymation.
Itching of the eyelids; oedematous swelling. Distinct twitching or quivering of the eyelids. Stinging pain in the eyeballs. Burning eye pain.
