Definition Classical Homeopathy

Classical Homeopathy is a term introduced by Prof. George Vithoulkas in 1978. It describes a precise and disciplined approach to homeopathic practice, based on the original teachings of Samuel Hahnemann, the Founder of Homeopathy. These teachings were later refined through the clinical insights of James Tyler Kent and further developed, systematized, and clarified by George Vithoulkas.

Classical Homeopathy emphasizes a holistic understanding of the individual, viewing each patient as a unique expression of physical, emotional, and mental characteristics. Rather than focusing solely on isolated symptoms, the practitioner seeks to understand the totality of the person’s condition in order to select the most appropriate remedy.

Students and practitioners of Classical Homeopathy are expected to study in depth the original writings and teachings of these three major figures. Their work forms the theoretical and practical foundation of this method and ensures a consistent, principled approach to treatment.

At its core, Classical Homeopathy is guided by a set of fundamental laws and principles:

  • The law of the individual remedy — each patient requires a remedy specifically suited to their unique symptom picture
  • The law of similimum (omoion) — the chosen remedy must closely match the totality of the patient’s symptoms
  • The law of the infinitesimal dose — remedies are administered in highly diluted forms to stimulate the body’s healing response
  • The law of the direction of cure — healing follows a predictable pattern, often moving from deeper to more superficial levels
  • The principle of a single remedy — only one remedy is given at a time, allowing clear observation of the patient’s response

This approach requires careful observation, detailed case-taking, and a deep understanding of materia medica and philosophy.

By adhering to these principles, Classical Homeopathy aims to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance and health in a gentle and individualized way.
