they are apt to indulge in too many sweets, and the result is that they develop a typical Iris headache. This is quite a usual history, and is easy to link up with the pancreatic pain.
In Iris we see clearly the involvement of the gall bladder, the excess of bile, the swelling of the liver and the pancreas creating through the enzymes severe acrid burning diarrhoeas to the extend that the inner mucus membranes of the intestines become inflamed and eventually ulcerated. Ulcerative colitis or spastic colitis with alteration of soft stool with constipation comes within the sphere of this remedy. Severe constipation and also severe diarrhoeas like cholera come within its sphere of action and all these gastrointestinal disorders in many times are connected with migraines.
Strong burning pains all through the gastrointestinal tract are characteristic. It produces acidity of the secretions and there is a sensation as though the contents of the stomach had turned to vinegar. Hence its acrid quality that produces severe burning pains in the mucous membranes. This can especially be seen in the gas- trointestinal tract, but also in the eyes and the urethra. The mouth, tongue and faeces feel as if on fire, as if being scalded, accompanied by a discharge of ropy saliva that is so copious that it drops out of the mouth when talking. This burning goes down the oe- sophagus into the stomach. There is vomiting of an extremely sour fluid that excoriates throat and the copious watery stool makes the anus feel as if on fire with burning and a sensation as if sharp points were sticking in it. This acrid quality also brings forth strong colic forcing the patient to bend forwards as can be seen in Colocynthis. The colic of Iris often comes up periodically at night, making the per- son restless and is ameliorated by passing flatus. This last modality makes it useful in colic of infants due to flatulence or constipation. In this group of our youngest patients we might also need Iris for indigestion of milk, which becomes sour in the stomach and is vom- ited.
The third important action can be seen on the skin, especially in vesicular eruptions. They can be located anywhere on the body and have a tendency to become pustules with a depression in the
