IPECACUANHA
Cephaelis ipecacuanha. Natural order: Rubiceae.
Tincture and trituration of the dried root.
Active ingredients: alkaloids Emetine (72%), Cephaelin (26%), and Psychotrine (2%). It owes its emetic properties in emetine, a white (turning to yellow when exposed to air and light), bitter tasting, odourless powder (forming also crystal- line salts), which occurs only in the cortical portion of the root.
ESSENTIAL FEATURES
This remedy is one you will need in the following pathological condi- tions:
1.Asthmatic conditions where there is wheezing heard from far and the coughing is attended with nausea and sometimes even vomiting. Constant tolerable dyspnoea that from time to time be- comes intolerable with coughing and nausea.
2.Fevers, like malaria and intermittent fevers, with chills that go up and down the back and are preceded by excessive saliva- tion.
3.Haemorrhages, like for instance after miscarriage, in metror- rhagia, in hemoptysis, in hematemesis or during prolonged menses where the blood will appear to be oozing constantly, but from time to time there is a gushing, a big bout of bright red blood, arterial, with a feeling of nausea and extreme weakness as if the patient would faint. Blood pouring in jets is another expression. When the uterus is continuously oozing and with every little gush of bright red blood there’s faintness or gasping and the quantity of the flow is not sufficient to account for such prostration, great nausea, syncope and pallor (Kent). The exception is constant oozing of thin blood without nausea.
