may develop a serious health problem. If married, they may worry about what would happen to their children if they were to die.
Another fear Ignatia can have is a peculiar fear of chickens and birds. Claustrophobia also can be seen, and panic attacks may oc- cur when the characteristic sighing becomes asthmatic (after a grief).
Ignatia doesn’t express that much love. She feels love but is cautious in the way she expresses it. She can be very gentle, yet she is still reticent about expressing her affection. Ignatia has difficulty saying I love you beyond childhood. During the interview, older Ignatia patients will not display emotions. In the interview they give only pe- ripheral information, avoiding painful memories. They speak coolly of their problems. A patient may say quite matter – of – factly, My husband doesn’t love me. The sadness that one would normally expect to see in someone making such an admission is not apparent. The tears that might reasonably be expected will not manifest.
UNPREDICTABILITY OF SYMPTOMS
Ignatia displays great unpredictability of symptoms. If a joint is red, swollen and inflamed, one would naturally be cautious in handling or touching it, but the Ignatia patient reports that it is ameliorated by hard touch, even though it is inflamed. She is even more comfort- able lying on the painful part. Most people find it hard to swallow food during a sore throat or bout of tonsillitis, but the Ignatia patient says that swallowing food relieves the pain. This paradoxical aspect is even more evident when the Ignatia patient suffers from an upset stomach. One would expect light foods like fruits, milk and boiled vegetables to relieve the stomach, but instead she is aggravated by those. She wants, and is relieved by, heavy foods, like dishes cov- ered with heavy sauces and spices. In fact the Ignatia patient tends to have a definite aversion to fruit, a light and natural food appre- ciated by nearly everyone. Approximately eighty percent of Ignatia patients will have such an aversion, a strong keynote for this remedy; twenty percent will have a desire. This aversion should be promoted to bold type in the repertory.
