Such unexplainable spasms also affect the skeletal muscles. I recall a patient who complained of severe myalgic spasms in her back in- volving the entire thoracic area. X – rays, orthopaedic and neurologi- cal examinations were all negative. I reviewed the case carefully and could not perceive any clear remedy image. Physically, this patient displayed some masculinising features which I have noticed in many Ignatia patients who have suffered a severe emotional shock. They seem to become hardened and cold, adopting masculine man- nerisms. The breasts may diminish somewhat in size and there may be a loss of sexual desire. A small amount of hair may grow on the chin or the upper lip. They seem to pay less attention to their com- plexion and their general physical appearance. They do not seem to care about what men think of them. This patient displayed some of these characteristics. In addition, she sat back in her chair in a closed and protected manner. This patient insisted on talking only about her muscular pains, refusing to see the relevance of questions which probed any deeper. Her whole manner displayed the attitude. Do not ask me about anything more. Do not get into that issue. With an Ignatia patient, if you touch upon a sensitive issue you may observe a momentary wavering or a catch in the voice as if she were about to cry, followed by an instantaneous withdrawal into a very controlled composure. This sobbing may last for a few moments, and then she will quickly regain her composure as if nothing had happened. As I probed into the history of this patient, I discovered that she had experienced a severe love disappointment. She was 38 years old and had broken up with her boyfriend of several years. She herself discounted this factor as a causation for her shoulder and back pains because it oc- curred three months prior to the onset of the pain. When asked how she felt in the interim, she admitted that it was a terrible time for her
– I just closed myself in my house and refused to see anyone. I spent hours sobbing alone and could barely continue with my job. It was about the time that the emotional symptoms lifted that she began to
