ESSENTIAL FEATURES
This remedy is commonly thought of as a remedy for acute states, like Belladonna and Aconite, but it also has a wide range of useful- ness in chronic conditions. The basic disturbance in Hyoscyamus, in all of its stages, is jealousy and suspicion. This is the result of their strong emotions and attachment to people of their environ- ment. Jealousy seems to motivate much of the behaviour, including occasional violent outbursts. Jealousy over his wife or the suspicion that everyone at the office is talking about him behind his back may be the first signs of this disturbance. The disturbance may then grow to include more and more people, widening the circle of suspicion from intimates and colleagues to acquaintances to, eventually, com- plete strangers. The final result may be either a simple paranoid state, in which contact with reality is maintained, or a florid state of schizophrenic paranoia. Hyoscyamus may even encompass cases of delirium tremens – patients full of suspicion, imagining insects crawl- ing all over them, seeing people outside the window who want to kill them etc. Such cases of paranoia are quite commonly seen today in mental institutions. These individuals are afraid of everyone; they may be convinced that people are trying to poison them and con- sequently refuse medicine and food (Lachesis).
The mania of Hyoscyamus is one of its principle features. It shares many similarities with the manias of other remedies but can be dis-
