knife. This pain takes away the breath and the voice, and provokes great anxiety.
There is a remarkable modality: ‘Painful contraction of chest, especially after drinking’. Almost all other symptoms in the respiratory tract are ameliorated by drinking. This might be called a ‘primary alternate action’ in Hahnemann’s language. In any case, spasmodic ailments in the chest region are in Cuprum always markedly influenced by drinking water; usually ameliorated, sometimes aggravated.
Stitching pain in the side with a shriek before and after, interrupting sleep. Sensation of too much blood rushing into the chest.
Cuprum cured pneumonia, with stitching pain in side (usually left-sided), pressive feeling behind sternum and severe pain on breathing deeply which com- pels a superficial respiration. Sudden onset of dyspnoea, oppression, and suffocative feeling; patients are compelled to sit up and are afraid they will suffocate.
Heart
Anxiety felt around the heart. Boring pain in region of heart. Sharp stitches directly below the heart, in the left side of chest.
Cuprum may be indicated in angina pectoris, with a death-like sensation of oppression and pain behind the ensiform process as well as severe dyspnoea with fear of suffocation; especially after excitement or physical exertion.
Stomach
Loss of appetite; ‘the food tastes like simple water’. Violent thirst for cooling drinks, especially water. Cold water ameliorates numerous symptoms, especially the cough is relieved but also vomiting. ‘Vomiting could be prevented by cold water’. But there is also vomiting that occurs ‘usually after drinking’.
Milk is not tolerated, and provokes water-brash.
Constant eructation, violent nausea, forceful vomiting, which returns from time to time.
Vomiting with diarrhoea, very difficult and exhausting, with violent griping and pressure in stomach.
