A detailed description of the stages of a Croton eruption:
1. Erythema; vivid warmth, followed after several hours by a reddening of the part.
2. Appearance of vesicles; numerous small vesicles, very close to each other, white or dark red, upon the reddened surface.
3. Appearance of pustules; on the third day pustules appear, white at the top, containing a liquid, which is usually not transparent, surrounded by a red aureola; erythema is less, while the itching continues.
4. Exsiccation; moisture oozes continually from the open pustules, the pus forms greyish laminae when drying, the skin still itches somewhat.
5. Falling off; the crusts become dry, the epidermis is regenerated, and there is desquamation on the places where vesicles and pustules had been.
Erysipelas with violent burning and swelling.
Croton may be indicated in dermatitis caused by contact with poison ivy; it is an antidote to Rhus toxicodendron.
Another case from Teste: a man had been subject to attacks of gout every spring for 15 years, except on two occasions, when instead a most obstinate and annoying exanthema appeared. It consisted of an intense redness over the whole surface of the body, accompanied by burning and itching, especially on the palms, upon the chest and behind the ears. On these parts an eruption of numerous small vesicles manifested, discharging a yellowish exudate. No matter how it was treated, this exanthema always lasted three months. When Teste saw the patient, he had neither gout nor this exanthema, but a cough. Then the patient suppressed the cough for a short time by taking some medicine on his own. The cough soon returned, but during the intermission his old skin complaint re-established itself, and he was covered by a horrible eczema from head to toe. After he received Croton, the itching disappeared the same day, and after six days no trace of the malady remained, neither of the cough nor of the skin eruption.
