A keynote of Corallium in all sorts of complaints is a desire for sour food that may be excessively strong (compare Hepar sulphuris, Veratrum album). In cases where the mucous memb- ranes of the respiratory tract are affected as described above, a striking desire for sour foods may bring Corallium to mind and may be decisive for remedy selection.
There is also a very marked desire for salted food, espe- cially for salty meat. It is not at all necessary that both of these desires are present at the same time, but if one of them is present to an unusual degree, together with other symptoms of Corallium, you should certainly think of this ‘small’ remedy.
Another important feature of Corallium is a sensitivity to both extremes of temperature, not only to cold but also to heat. This is a good symptom to differentiate between Corallium and Hepar sulphuris. In the proving of Corallium, we read: ‘If he uncovers in bed, he feels too cold, but under the covers he feels too hot’ (compare Mercury). If the body is burning hot, taking clothes off may relieve the complaints, for example a violent headache in the forehead, with pressure from within outwards. On the other hand, the proving also brought out these symptoms: ‘The hot parts are chilly when uncovering’ and ‘the symptoms of chill and fever are relieved by artificial heat’.
Skin manifestations of Corallium will usually have its innate colour, at least in the beginning stage: coral red. ‘Smooth spots on palm and single fingers, first coral red, then dark red, finally copper coloured’. Corallium has acted upon such skin eruptions resembling roseola, but also in rough, rash-like, red eruptions if a more or less circular area was affected. A quick and complete cure of an eruption on both elbows was reported; it had felt ‘rough, like a grater’.
Corallium is pre-eminently a left-sided remedy, many symptoms exclusively occur on, or prefer, the left half of the body.
