another remedy is underlying and might be indicated, although not easy to ascertain. Difficulty arises because the person will say that he feels well, and if he feels well there is no symptoma-tology on which you can base your next remedy. But if you’re observant you might find that, little things may suggest that there could be a Calcarea carbonica underneath this Phosphorus case. If you are able to give Calcarea carbonica, the patient will tend not to relapse as easily. But, if the patient does relapse, you will see that they will not revert to the pathology of Phosphorus, but rather to the pathology of Calcarea carbonica.
I don’t uphold the theory of the three miasms – sycosis, syphi-lis and psora – because I believe that, due to our societies, we have become imprinted with more than just three miasms. Let’s take the cancer miasm for example: What is the cancer miasm? It is the result of cumulative genetic influence on the patient’s predecessors and their constitutions, which in turn predisposes the patient for cancer. Once this genetic predisposition becomes too strong you may have to give Cancerinum; it will act because there is already an imprint on the individual – a new layer, which is completely separate. Even though the patient themselves does not have cancer – perhaps they are suffering from asthma or colitis – Cancerinum nevertheless acts, because the miasm has been imprinted upon this individual. We would give Cancerinum because either the patient’s mother, father, or sibling died of can-cer. In the same way we would prescribe Tuberculinum or Bacil-linum if we’ve seen frequent cases of tuberculosis in the family history. The problem is, when to start a case with Cancerinum, or Tuberculinum, or give Phosphorus and then Tuberculinum?1

1 In my paper on miasms, (The evolution of Miasm Theory and its relevance to Homeopathic prescribing’-Vithoulkas G., Chabanov. D., Homeopathy 2022) I have explained Hahnemann’s idea of miasm, behind which is the idea of infection. Today, when we talk about miasm, we mean simply a predisposition. In general, something that has been passed from generation to generation, that may either be due to the three misams or from other factors.
