the headache has reached its peak and vomiting ameliorates so that the patient knows that the crisis is over. Such are the subtle differences that the homeopath should be paying attention to.
Iris is similar to Gelsemium in some respect: both have amelioration of the headache from abundance of urination that comes with the termination of the headache. Other similarities are vomiting with the headaches, aggravation from mental exertion and periodical, blinding, stunning headaches; but the headache of Gelsemium is mostly congestive and goes from the occiput upwards. Motion will aggravate the Gelsemium headache, while gentle motion ameliorates the pain in Iris.
Iris type of headaches may also commence after maltreated and sup- pressed rhinitis or sinusitis. Another characteristic that I have ob- served in such cases is that after suppressed sinusitis or rhinitis the inflammation does not go down to the respiratory track to create dyspnoea, as is usually the case with other remedies, but the inflam- mation jumps to the vascular system, which then is manifesting as Iris headaches.
In woman such migraines may be appearing in connection with the menses, during the time of the flow.
Eating sweets can have a negative effect and cause headache, as well as alcohol for which the patient has a strong desire. During the migraine the patient does not want to lie down, actually if he does he is aggravated. The pain is often aggravated from strong or sudden movements, but ameliorates from gentle motion, es- pecially in open air. Very cold air, however, as well as sitting still and concentrating the mind also aggravates it. One of the original provers, W.H. Burt, noticed that “No remedy has a more specific action upon the pancreas than Iris, and its action upon this gland is more powerful than on any other organ in the system. No remedy produces such burning agony in this gland, as does Iris. All the animals I poisoned with it had genuine inflammation of this gland.” This is probably the reason why Borland writes about the relationship between the Iris headache and the use of sugar. “Iris versicolor is in the pancreatic region, and it is interesting that Iris patients are sensitive to sugar. If they are over – tired they tend to get a sugar hunger. Then
