Pneumonia
J. B., aged 28; light complexion, slender build; predisposed to con- sumption, father and aunt having died of that disease at 33 and 35, respectively. Was seized with a chill on the afternoon of October 6th which lasted all night. Saw him next morning and I was struck by his peculiar shrunken and emaciated appearance. The face presented an ashen color; the whole body was cold and shrunken; had severe hacking cough; great distress and feeling of constriction about the chest; pulse small, hard and wiry; great thirst for water; numb, weak feeling over the body; trembling, and violent palpitation of the heart on the least motion; had thin, reddish-colored stool that morning. Tincture iodine, thirty drops; water, eight ounces; two teaspoonfuls every hour. The patient was kept in bed, and room well ventilated. October 8th he feels better; slight perspiration over the body; cough loose, tinged with blood; temperature, 101 ; pulse, 110; tongue thickly coated; no appetite. Continued medicine. October 11th he feels well, thinks he could get up; temperature, 99 ; pulse, 95, soft, full and regular; cough loose; expectoration frothy, slimy and lighter in color; left side of chest feels better; wants to eat. Continued medi- cine. From this time B. continued to improve until October 17th, when he sat up for the first time. A complete recovery followed. No other drug was given.
