In spite of this mental exhaustion, the patient continues to be restless, keeping himself busy, increasing thus this mental prostration. Such a state, restlessness with prostration, comes under Iodine and Arsenicum but they are easily differentiated since the one is a very hot patient while the other very cold. Sulphuric acid is another remedy that combines these two elements, but it is also a cold remedy with its own specific symptoms.
Discouragement and despondency, continues also during the pains in a very depressing manner. He feels unable to do anything. He is tired, discouraged and depressed, anxious and dejected. He is afraid of every trifle, that one or another misfortune may rise from it. He has fear of evil, with over-carefulness; anxiety about health, cancer and heart disease. A strange symptom is anxiety developing during or after manual fine work, which goes off while stopping the work.

The following report of poisoning with Iodum shows some of its typi- cal symptoms: “A robust man of over 40, who for a large goitre had taken without precaution and without consulting anyone a consider- able quality of iodine tincture, had violent agitation, palpitations, pulse nervous and tremulous, alternately soft and hard but always very frequent… The following days were marked by heat so great that, although it was November, he remained day and night naked on his bed in a cool room, yet complaining that he burned…He emaciated fast, his eyes became cavernous. He had, from the beginning of his illness, a remarkable trembling of the whole body, but especially of the arms. Upon the palpitations supervened faintings with cold sweats. He continued thus for 5 weeks, when he died suddenly.” (Zink, Journ. Compl., xviii, 126.)
This report shows the agitating effect of Iodine on the organism, causing palpitations, rapid pulse, trembling and twitching, augmented temperature and emaciation. One aspect that is typical for Iodine that is not mentioned in this report is the general emaciation together with induration and swelling of glands.
