music, philosophy etc. They are mature, refined and intelligent. At some point they become involved in a great love affair. At first it is an idyllic experience, full of romance and perfection. After time though, comes the realization that the romance is imperfect. The boyfriend may be seen with another girl, for instance. As a result they withdraw. Eventually they create a scene and ask for a separation. Later, if encouraged to do so, they may agree to a reconciliation, but they remain dissatisfied and attempt to quit the relationship again, pretending not to love the other person while, in reality, fearing being hurt. This behaviour is most typical of teenagers between 17 and 19 years old. The sighing which is so renowned an accompaniment of Ignatia states will not necessarily be seen in all Ignatia teenage cases.
Ignatia needs affection and continued reassurance. After a num- ber of disappointments she will stop expressing affection, but she always needs it. She also expects gratitude from others for her service. If she fails to receive gratitude, she is hurt but she doesn’t complain. As a relationship deteriorates, she fears the humiliation of being the one to be jilted, so she terminates the affair first. Even so, her profound sensitivity to romantic disappointment can result in an hysterical display of grief. At some point, after several efforts at reconciliation, she breaks down and becomes very nasty toward her lover. Later, out of remorse over her actions, she goes to her room and cries and cries.
IGNATIA ADULT
Later in life, the Ignatia woman seeks a mature, reliable mate. She settles on someone with whom she is not madly in love, a form of self – protection to avoid being hurt later. Her marriage isn’t based upon true love. She is now a woman who is very able and who copes with life well, though without experiencing intense feel- ings. She still has feelings, but she keeps them at arms length. Then, at some point, another cause for grief occurs. It may be the death of a loved one, for instance.
