Violent urges plus a strong and deviant sexual drive suggests Hyoscyamus. The sexual element is distorted, turned inside out. He doesn’t necessarily perform sexual acts; he has more of a mental sexuality. Hyoscyamus becomes completely possessed by his sex- ual attraction to someone. He obsessively visualizes the woman’s body. He follows the woman of his desire. He uses pornography to stimulate himself. His passion is excessive. Jealousy can overtake and paralyze him. Tarentula and Veratrum album can be sexual in a similar manner.
Here it is as if the unconscious, which was previously controlled by obsessive and paranoid ideation, finally erupts on the instinctual level and is contained there, without progressing on to the degree of violence seen in Stramonium. It seems to also be true that Hyo- scyamus acts most effectively in people who tend to live on the in- stinctual level in their normal life, governed by immediate needs and whims or impulses. It may also benefit people of a more spiritual nature who are obstructed or hung up in relationship to the dilemma over sexuality and instincts.
The shamelessness of Hyoscyamus can manifest in several differ- ent ways, and patients need not be in the throes of insane manias to display this behaviour. A more subtle chronic form of Hyoscyamus shamelessness exists. Children of nine years will play with their geni- tals. During interviews they may make unconscious gestures toward the genital area such as when describing the location of a symptom. Such gesturing will also be seen in stroke victims or senile patients who will pick at things and whose hands will go to the genitals. One will encounter Hyoscyamus patients who expose themselves or who love to attend nude beaches for the pleasure of showing off their naked body. Shamelessness can pervade their entire lifestyle. During the interview seek even subtle clues by asking such questions as, Do you like to leave the bathroom door open while you are inside? or Do you walk about the home undressed?
The acute Hyoscyamus delirium is characterized by much twitching of muscles and a passive mania. Its acute state has hydrophobic symptoms: dread of water, fear of hearing running water,
