tients are so sensitive to cold that can be overdressed even in hot weather, they want to be in warm rooms and they tolerate much heat. A memorable peculiarity of this remedy is its sensitivity to touching cold surfaces, such as cold metal, cold marble, etc. Even touching such a surface with only the fingertips can bring on a gen- eral aggravation. Again, in this symptom we see the concept of ex- posed, oversensitive nerve endings. There is an immediate reaction
– a cough or chill without delay. Even sticking a hand or a foot out of the covers may bring on these symptoms.
Hepar is aggravated by open air, drafts, and cold dry winds which are all intolerable to these patients and bring on generalized aggravations. Even the draft from an air conditioner can cause a general aggravation or a slight wetting of the body can cause painful throbbing here and there. They’re so sensitive that they often have a feeling as if wind were blowing on some part. That s why they usu- ally cover themselves up to the neck when in bed.
All complaints are better by warmth, warm bed, near the stove, be- ing wrapped up, being covered even in a warm room.
Hepar is one of the best remedies for progressed stages of the com- mon cold. It is not wise to give such a deep – acting remedy for an ordinary cold. If you have given Aconite, Bryonia, Gelsemium, etc., but the cold has nevertheless imprinted itself deeply on the organism as a sinusitis or bronchitis, especially when the cough is a prominent symptom, then Hepar must be considered. It should be considered a third level remedy for colds and flues.
We will see a catarrhal state, especially of the nose, ears, throat, larynx and chest and all the discharges are profuse, fetid, foul, like old cheese, sour.
There are, of course, the splinter – like pains for which Hepar is famous – especially in the throat. The pains of Hepar may be very se- vere and very sharp. This is so intense that it is described at times as a sticking and jagging like sharp sticks. This sensation is often observed in sore throats which is a leading symptom of Hepar. The patient feels
