After having learned this keynote symptom of his case, I prescribed Gelsemium 10M, one dose, with truly impressive results. Gelsemium had a far deeper and more complete effect on him than any of the previous medicines, curing for good his duodenal ulcer.
Not everyone who is afraid of going to court, etc. will need Gelsemium but this is the prime remedy you must think of. The prospect of appearing in court is a reasonable cause for some fear, but to feel similar emotions about an ordinary meeting is excessive, especially for a man as accomplished as he was.
With such constitutional weakness and frailty, it is easy to understand why Gelsemium has ailments from grief, from fright, and from suddenly hearing bad news. It is likewise easy to comprehend the adverse effect of excitement on Gelsemium. Gelsemium is the only bold-type remedy in the rubric, ‘Excitement after had news’. They get excited very easily, but they lack the vitality to manifest it strongly.
Their excitement is, by contrast, enfeebled and tremulous to an observer. To them, however, the excitement is too much to bear; they feel as if their nervous system is too weak and frail and the excitement too strong for them to control. Thus, they may some¬times express the concern that they may ‘lose control’ or feel they are going crazy.
Sudden noises, thunderstorms etc., can provoke such excitement. Sometimes they will feel fear when descending in an elevator, like Borax, a fear of downward motion. Gelsemium can be an hysterical remedy, the excitable element can reach an hysterical level of expression.
Again, the idea of frailty, weakness, and trembling can help us to understand the origin of the heart symptomatology of Gelsemium; the tremulousness and sense of paralysis affect the heart, giving rise to the sensation that the heart will stop. They feel that they must
move to keep the heart beating.
