THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES
The idea which comes to mind with Gelsemium is frailty; frailty which leads to trembling, weakness, and at times, paralysis. The frailty can exist in either the mind, the emotions, or the body; a frail person, weak, defenceless, trembling internally from fear and exter¬nally from weakness of the nervous system; a person that cannot face any challenge in life. It is one of the main remedies where the person is a real coward. This concept is the basic framework to which further information about Gelsemium can be added.
Weakness of thought constitutes the frailty of the mind. The thinking process is not clear, powerful or straightforward. When you examine them you can see a hesitation, as if they are not sure about anything they say, and the lack of clarity in the expression is obvious. These people appear to suffer from a basic weakness on all levels. Seeing them, one would anticipate correctly that they tire easily. Their mental faculties are failing them, they lack intellectual acuity and speed.
This frailty increases until it deteriorates into a form of mental dullness. The memory begins to fail, and the dullness worsens, especially when they tire themselves. They are easily exhausted mentally, and after any mental exertion, their memory falters. Eventually dullness leads to confusion, the mind becoming almost paralyzed.
Weakness, trembling, and paralysis run throughout the remedy. Internally, because of this weakness, there is a sense of dissatis¬faction. If they should hear some bad news, their weak mind and
