boil’. As is said in a proving symptom: ‘At the least contrariety, the body shivers and the blood boils, with prickling’.
Among further fears of Elaps patients are a marked horror of rain and especially of thunderstorms, together with a general aggravation before the onset of a storm. Moreover there is an anxiety about some fatal disease; a stomach ache may make them think that they have cancer of the stomach. ‘Fear causes chattering of the teeth and trembling’ (Boger).
This remedy will be indicated in the strongest panic attacks, when the fear is so great that the teeth are chattering, and the whole person is trembling from fear of dying. Underneath all the fears of the Elaps patient is the strong fear of death, and of an impending disaster in his health. Fear of animals and (appropriately) of snakes, is also strong.
This is an excitable remedy where the patient may even bite himself in a hysterical crisis. In women this hysterical state usually comes before the menses. It has been recorded that one patient bit his own arms during sleep. Epileptic seizures before the menses, after masturbation, or after arousal, may also indicate Elaps.
Elaps patients sometimes suffer from profound ennui, they become very bored. In later stages, the intellect is severely affected. This first shows up in a kind of absence of mind, or ‘absence of thought’. If patients in such a condition hear someone talking, it will not anger them, because they do not even understand the meaning of the words correctly, although they hear the sound of the words very clearly. Finally there are real blackouts, like a loss of memory from alcohol. ‘Complete loss of consciousness, so that time passes by unperceived’ (from Mure’s proving).
Besides the mental symptoms, Elaps has a number of very peculiar and unusual symptoms on the physical level which may be used as keynotes. As for instance:
