Mucus, blood and pus in the urine; constant, painful urging.
Clarke mentions a combination of symptoms that will indicate Dulcamara: muco-purulent urine which is associated with general one-sided sensitivity, especially of the abdomen.
A cured case: difficulty with urine for years; frequent micturition in cold and wet weather, but only in drops; stains linen yellow. Worse in the afternoon. Pain over left kidney and left iliac region, better after moving about and in warm weather. Sweats easily and often takes cold, when he suffers from sore throat. Dislikes sweets.
A keynote that should make one consider Dulcamara immediately: if patients says that they have to urinate immediately when they become cold. Some symptoms from the proving:
Burning in the orifice of the urethra when urinating.
Urine turbid, whitish, sometimes offensive; offensive urine coupled with foetid perspiration.
Reddish, burning urine; slimy sediment in the urine, now red, now white.
In Rückert’s Clinical Experiences the following case of a 60-year-old man is found, who had been suffering for nine years from severe urinary complaints after catching cold. The symptoms: ‘Nearly constant urging, which is felt deep in the abdomen, extending into the genital region, with a burning in the hips as if the urine should come but an obstacle seems to prevent it. With this, violent urging and painful burning through the whole penis. Urine is only discharged in drops, with intervals, evacuation aided by pressure with the finger upon the prostate gland’. The urging was present day and night, never allowing more than half an hour’s rest; the urine contained a tough and mucous sediment and bloody knots, and had a putrid odour. An attending symptom was trembling, especially of the right arm.
In addition, Dulcamara may act curative in involuntary urination from paralysis of the bladder. The remedy cured a 16-year-old woman who first had a strangury which later changed into bed-wetting; there were striking mental symptoms: impatience and quarrelsomeness.
Finally a remarkable symptom that was observed in a one-year-old boy suffering from pemphigus: ‘Urine smelling strong, turbid when passed, and causing itching-burning pains on the parts it touches’. Not only the skin affection, but also the urinary symptom was removed by Dulcamara.
