Ears
Children with a great tendency to catarrhal otitis media in consequence of every cold they catch. Very violent earache, especially at night, during rest; all night through, unable to fall asleep because of the pain. Sometimes the pain suddenly ceases in the morning, yet a rushing noise in the ear remains. Earache attended by great nausea.
A kind of pricking sensation, first in one ear, then in the other, as if very cold air had penetrated through it.
Fine stitches in meatus auditorius and parotis, the latter frequently swollen.
‘Tearing in the left ear, with stitches in the ear, from within outward; with this, drumming and bubbling noises in front of the ear, impairing the hearing; also a crackling in the ear when opening the mouth, as if the ear were cracked’.
Nose
Great inclination to ‘head colds’ and coryza, especially with stoppage of the nose. Patients who say, “Doctor, in cold, damp weather I can’t breathe through my nose.” Has to breathe through the mouth, and for this reason there is much snoring in sleep.
Profuse discharge of mucus from the nose, infants with ‘always running’ noses. But Dulcamara is especially indicated when fluent coryza stops suddenly from exposure to cold air, and the nostrils become stopped.
Very much post-nasal mucus. Or else: ‘dry’ coryza, the discharge suddenly ceasing from exposure to cold air, with sensation of extreme dryness in the respiratory tract; after slackening of the secretion headaches, aphonia and other complications occur.
Hay fever and other allergic reactions, with great sensitivity to newly mown grass; nose congested, eyes red and watering; ameliorated by warmth, aggravated by cold.
Coryza which is ameliorated from motion but aggravated when at rest.
‘Every year as the nights become cold, and there is cold, damp weather and fall rains, he has a stuffing up of the nose with constant sneezing and wants the nose kept warm. I have known these cases at times to sit in a warm room with cloths, wrung out of hot water, over the face and nose to relieve the distress, the catarrhal state of the eyes and the stuffing up of the nose.
