insomnia from a rush of thoughts into the mind. But eventually the hormones reduce in strength and they become disinterested in sex.
‘Feel dull and cross; desire to be alone; do not enjoy society; am usually quite fond of the society of ladies, but now they seem repulsive; sexual desire sadly diminished’.
If they have sex or a nocturnal ejaculation they feel awful, depressed, weak and trembling in the knees. There is great despondency, bad memory, lack of energy, lack of will connected with spermatorrhoea. Dioscorea has often been used successfully in cases of spermatorrhoea with mental symptoms. Seminal emissions sometimes constitute a great burden for the patients. They have a feeling as if their back had become lame and their knees had given out; they feel utterly miserable.
One patient always looked at the ground when he was among people, although he tried to mask his depressive mood. He suffered so much from his ejaculations that he tried to stay awake the whole night in order to make sure that ‘it couldn’t happen again’. Their anxiety is very connected with the condition of the bowel, and they may develop anxiety or anguish during intestinal pain, before or after a stool.
Dioscorea patients have a tendency to lassitude, and also to fainting. A sensation of weakness and faintness in the stomach region is characteristic, but it may be felt in any region of the body. ‘At stool, faint sensation, near syncope; feared I should faint’. Another proving symptom: ‘Unusual languor on waking, with disinclination for mental exertion’. This lassitude may be coupled with great nervousness. ‘Feel tired and languid, still keep moving around the room, restless’.
